OK, so I bought this and I agree with most of the people on here: really good iron for the price. [...] All in all, this soldering iron is the best bang for your buck. Performs over and over for and for my friends. I am a hobbyist when it comes to small projects and computer parts, so this has been a lifesaver.

Tips *ARE* available
By CameronVerified Reviewer from Austin, TX on 11/22/2008
Pros:
Good Value
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Price is decent..yes, it is a bit of a pain to order the replacement tips from another source; but not THAT big of a deal. Still bad marketing on RadioShack's part to not offer parts for their most expensive iron. But this seems to be a problem with many of their irons; makes me wonder if they bother to read these reviews?
Madell AT 201 D

Digital Soldering Station
By AstroBob from Michigan on 11/15/2008
Pros:
High Quality
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

Product is very good...very fine control over soldering heat. Biggest problem is that it seems RS doesn't carry the replacement tips for it. I found that the unit is actually a Madell AT 201 D and you can get spare parts and tips from them. Google the name. It should come with either a catalog number of spare tips and where to get them...or RS should have them in their catalog.
It appears to be just as good as the Weller station which cost quite a bit more.

Too cool by half, literally
By PeteVerified Reviewer from Franklin, Mass. on 11/10/2008
Cons:
Low Quality
Bottom Line:
No, I would not recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I received this as a Fathers Day gift this year; it gave me one session of decent soldering. Then it flipped out. Display went erratic, with readings rapidly bouncing around between 0 and 700 degrees. Then it just quit. After a five-month rest, I fired it up again and it worked, for all of 15 minutes. It resumed it's bounce, then the tip went cold, and the display rendered nothing by dashes. And yes, it was still plugged in...

Great Station, Low Price
By Crisco from Burlington, WA on 11/4/2008
Pros:
Good Value, High Quality
Cons:
Included tip useless
Bottom Line:
Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I solder quite a bit and this is almost a replica of what I use in the Navy. Great quality and the digital display is awesome and easy to set. The 3 presets are great! The only real downfall is the included tip is a pencil-type tip so it's very small and heat dissipation is very limited. However, [...] has replacement tips for like $6.00. Just google [...] solder tips and you'll find it. HIGHLY recommended.

soldering iron replacement tips
By workman from Oklahoma on 10/26/2008

I would not buy any iron that doesn't have replacement tips listed on the same page as the iron. That's more important than "things you might want".

This is a great little iron at a fraction of the price of comparable Weller units. They have a wide variety of sizes of replacement tips at the MadellTech site.

nozzles-tips is the page with html as the extension.

Yes, Radio Shack should carry them, but it's not that big of a deal to order them.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

This soldering station looks great. Its features are great and its very inexpensive for what it can do.Unfortunately as other reviews have pointed out, tips are not available for this item. Radio Shack simply doesn't carry them. A soldering iron that you can't get tips for is completely useless. [...]Don't waste your time or money, this product looks great and it would be the best soldering station for the money anywhere...but without replacement tips its completely worthless.

I can't for the life of me understand why anyone would market a really nice solder station but not offer replacement range of tips. This becomes a fairly useless tool without the specialized tips needed to make this a viable product - what a shame.

I typically use this for soldering IC chips for college projects and it works great for that. The only problems I see is they offer NO spare tips and the provided tip is only good for small jobs. If I could find more tips than I would have to say this is a flawless product.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I was seriously disappointed after buying this station to replace my old RS Digital station that pooped out. I typically solder fine 28 AWG wire to RCA connectors. The tip that comes with this iron couldn't sufficiently heat the area required to solder the fine wire to the RCA connector. When I went back the RS to find a more suitable tip. I was told they didn't have one. What? How in the world can you sell a soldering iron for this kind of money and NOT have more than one tip for it? I was told by the RS employee that it was a "digital" soldering station, and was therefore designed to be used with "digital components" that are smaller. I could hardly contain my laughter at this comment. Bottom line is the employee said the stationw as not returnable without the box (I had thrown away), and I now must purchase a new station.

Comments about RadioShack Digital Soldering Station:

I recent got into HAM radio and am in the process of building a receiver. I wanted a product with good heat control that was easy to use. This solder station fit the bill. It heats up fast and works great. Since I don't have a spot to keep it set up, I bought a hard side case from a building supply store and removed the foam to fit the solder station. Makes a neat package that can be kept safely stored or taken with me when needed.
