Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

The "Exit POI" feature doesn't work at all. Throughout our entire road trip, we were unable to pull up the approaching points of interest for the next exit. The 1200 would ask for a memory card to be inserted. Tech support acknowledges this as a known bug, and 6 months after I bought the unit there is still no fix. I'm returning it.
If this feature worked as advertised, I would be very happy with the 1200. It does a great job with directions, though gets a little confused with one-way streets.

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

I use this device for getting my job done during the work day. I travel all over the place, and most places I don't know where they are until I get there. This GPS system has really saved me a lot of time and headaches. Every once in a while there is a street that does not show up in the system which is a bit frustrating, but 95% of the time every address I punch in to the keypad I find, and it takes me right to it!
The only things that I don't like about this particular model is that the voice does not pronounce the street names before you go to turn on to them, so you have to look at the system every time to view which street you are going to turn down next. But, for the price, this is an excellent tool and I love it!

Cons:
Short Battery Life

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

I found this incredibly easy to set up and begin using. I have had zero issues with it. It's easy enough to use that my wife was able to navigate with no prior GPS experience and without reading the manual. Can be slow to re-acquire satellites. Haven't had a battery life issue, but I mostly use it plugged-in.

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

I bought this to hopefully replace Hertz Neverlost that I always use whenever renting a car in the US. Got it at a sale price in a Miami Radio Shack last week. Had the opportunity to compare the two systems side by side and I was impressed. I used to have to rent at least a midsize car to get the Neverlost (not available with compact/economy cars). Now, with the Roadmate 1200, I can rent whatever size car is needed. Also the speed at which satellites are acquired was amzaing. Although there aren't street maps from my home (Trinidad), it does display the general country map, along with standard GPS coordinates, elevation and directio like any standard handheld.

Radio Shack has the best price on this GPS. My son has had one for 6 months and uses it daily for his sales job. The only thing it doesn't have is voice-to-text where it states the road names, but who needs that? Voice directions are clear and map is very easy to follow. Setup is simple. Highly Recommended!

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

I have a great sense of direction but I'm moving to a new city very soon and thought it would come in handy as I learn the lay of the land. Been testing out in my current neighborhood and found it to be very accurate. Never have a problem acquiring sats very fast. Very easy to look up addresses and add them to a address book for future trips. Very helpful in planning road trips too, with restaurant and gas along the way. The voice prompt is pleasant too. I don't put mine on the windshield--afraid I'll hit a car. Bought a friction mat for now but am looking to rig it on my vent. Easily switchable when I take my husbands car or travel. Dislike that it can't be charged in the house (just in case I want to use it away from the car). Highly recommend for road trips or just for quick map access when you're out and about.

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

The factory built this GPS with a flaw... the exit POI does not work and they are unable to correct so the unit will not help on interstate driving with the POI's near exits... This flaw is on all model 1200 and should not be sold with this flaw...The service department has told me that they can not fix this problem...

This is my second gps (for testing) that i have used the 1st one was tomtom one 3rd edition. i bough the Magellan 1200 from radioshack for [$] its slim, easy to set up in less then 2 mins. i get more sattelites believe me i have checked the satellietes status and it shows up to 9 satellites in massachusettswork in my building, text to speech only with female voice, takes only 4 to 6 secs to adquire an address or point of interest, i like that fact that the Magellan can tell me where to turn before i get there even from 5 miles away i can also search points of interest in a different state right from my house.

Blows the doors off the $1000 clonker that is built into my wife's Volvo. UI is very intuitive, gives you the controls/options you need when you need them and only then. responsive touch screen, battery operation too so you can take it with you on a trail or some such if you wanted. 48 lower + hawaii + puerto rico. bright screen, more readable than most screens 2x its size. SD upgradeable.

I purchased this gadget for my husband who does all the driving and leave the map reading up to me. I am not good with maps so this is just perfect for our road trips. It's gets us from point A to point B with no problems and I don't have a big sheet of paper trying to figure out which way to go. The only thing I don't like about it is when driving in the city it takes you on the scenic routes more times than not. [$]

Delievery service use. Ok in the city but in rural settings, it will not get you close enough to the location. 300 plus feet is not good enough. Volume to low. Needs to be atleast 50% higher.

Comments about Magellan® Magellan RoadMate 1200 North America GPS:

This is a great basic GPS unit.

I asked for a similarly priced Tom Tom GPS for Christmas and listed this one as an alternate. The Tom Tom was sold out at Radio Shack, so my wife bought the Magellan Roadmate 1200 instead.

I have always believed in reading the manual throughly and I always find at least one little tid bit that I probably would not find on my own. That was the case here. It took about an hour of reading and playing and driving around to get to know it well. As with any product with many features, I rarely use about half of what is available. Now, after two months, it is still easy to find the features that I don't use often.

The unit is acurate within about 50 feet.

My main gripe about this unit is the battery. It runs out in 2-3 hours. I would have preferred a battery life of 8 or more hours so I would not have to use the cigar lighter adapter in the car.

Be aware that thieves look for the round suction cup mark on the windshield. I have my unit Velcroed to the instrument panel well under the sun hood. It covers the tachometer when in place. I bought a cigar lighter plug and wired it into the dashboard mounted cigar lighter wire with a suitcase connector, then routed the power cable thru a gap in the dash board. Everything is well hidden when the GPS unit is removed.

Now my wife wants one of these - solves the Mother's day gift problem.

but I brought it back to the radio shack (with recipt)and they swapped it on the spot, no problems since.

As with most new electronic devices, this one too took some getting used to. It was very easy to listen to the prompts and go to the next phase. The screens are laid out perfectly for quick viewing. But the real fun began when I downloaded the update onto the unit. All my usual stores and POI's were added onto the memory card. Have been completely satisfied with this product.

Good unit works well. Tried it on some back roads here where I live and found some roads that I did not even know was there! Just bought this on 12-7-07. Seems to be kinda buggy but i am sure that a firmware upgrade will fix the small problems. Only big problem I have found is the rerouting is kinda slow but for a basic no bells an whistles unit, you cant beat it for the money!
