Magellan GPS units are great WHEN THEY WORK. If you require repair, it is easier to pull your own teeth with tweezers. Magellan Canada is almost nonexistent and when you finally get a hold of them, they don't do anything for you. Magellan US is another story, they will keep in touch to resolve the problem, but only if you flood their mailbox with Emails, then it takes at least a month to get anything done.
Magellan units are as good as anything else out there BUT if you have problems you'll have less headaches if you (take the loss) through the thing in the garbage and go get another one. The units come with outdated maps and they charge you $80+shipping to get current ones.
I can't comment on Garmin but people I know who have these claim they had no problem with them and one guy who did said getting it fixed was a breeze. My friend had his Garmin maps updated free.
I have a Maestro 4210 and 3210, Both have had problems.
10 Oct / Just got my 4210 replacement. What Magellan does is send you a factory refurbished unit (someones else's junk). Everything is outdated, Maps, Firmware, Hardware, and AAA data. I have no idea how long this is going to take to get straightened out.
I purchased my 4210 on the 22nd Aug 2008 , I haven't got 3 weeks use out of it yet and it's now the 9th of November. BUT I was finally offered the map update free but only if I pay shipping (My friends Garmin was free). When I finally do get a working unit , I'll sell it for $50 and get the Garmin , no more headaches.
