Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I live in Fresno, California. I had to place the antenna about 6 feet from my dtv, which required purchasing a coupler and extension cable. It picks up NBC, ABC, PBS, CW, sometimes Fox, and an oldies movie station. I have to get up and adjust the weaker stations from time to time (PBS and Fox), but the others are rock solid and look great. I'd recommend this with the caveat that it's not a substitute for cable or dish. Maybe things will get better after analog shuts off?

I originally bought an amplified antenna which worked well before the digital stuff came along. I had to replace it with this one because Binghamton NBC is broadcasting on the cheap low power digital channel and I could not get their station anymore. Now I got 7 channels since I moved the antenna to the other side of the house. Still looking for that elusive NBC station. Position is key with any antenna.

My city lost Fox from cable due to a contract dispute and I've been using the antennae to watch the Sunday night lineup. The reception is pretty good (not as good as cable) and the directions are straightforward and easy to understand. I recommend it. It's not spectacular technology or anything but it definitely has been helpful.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I have a hi-def Sony Bravia TV, and a hi-def cable package. Since Fox ended their contract with Time warner, I had to come up with alternate plan to get the fox channel. I hooked it up, and was not immediately impressed (picture was fuzzy), but once I ran the search for the digital channels, my TV is bringing 9 local high def channels from at least 45 miles away! You can't tell the cable hi-def from the antenna hi-def. Seriously! They are identical in quality. I am totally, TOTALLY satisfied, and would recommend this antenna to anyone! I do have an amplifier hooked up, and don't know what it would be without that, but it's so perfect now, I'm afraid to disconnect it.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I've never had much luck with receiving analog signals where I live in Metro Atlanta. I'm in the middle unit of a three story apt in a valley surrounded by tall trees; my outside wall and windows face away from the tv towers. I asked the Radio Shack rep for a recommendation to use with my new Tivax converter box and he said to use an amplified antenna since Atlanta has a ton of interference. I hooked this up without power, sitting on the floor, dipoles retracted and picked up two channels. Then I plugged it in and set the gain to max, resulting in 11 channels. Finally I moved it on top of my tv, fully extended the dipoles, and performed another channel scan; 18 channels were found with a clear and smooth picture. I'm keeping this one, and can finally get rid of cable.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

At the highest point in the county where a number of transmitters are located, I can only tune the NBC and ABC channels in HD. The standard signal is unwatchable. The gain knob is more of an off-on switch. Using the signal strength meter on my TV, I get one bar if the gain is off and 4-5 if its own, regardless of position.

I will be looking for another alternative.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I received equivalent performance to this antenna from my non-amplified rabbit-ears antenna on the same digital set top box. Furthermore, in trying to adjust it to pull in a long-range signal (70 miles), the antenna fell and both telescoping rods immediately bent and crimped, one so severely that it snapped the next time I touched it. This was the first day I used it. This unit is flimsy and I'm going to ask about restitution because it broke far too easily compared to my good old rabbit ears.

I have bought and returned several models, and this one is the first that easily receives all the hd signals in my area (Little Rock). Granted, I'm not too far from the towers, but the Phillips antennas (amplified and unamplified) and my old rabbit ears wouldn't pull in the NBC station. This antenna works great - I have the gain on, though at only 15% or so, and I receive all local signals just fine.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I am in a Chicago suburb about 15 to 20 miles from most of the Chicago area TV stations. This antenna with the amplifier on gets about 30 digital stations with good signal strength, with my Radio Shack digital TV converter. I am in a second floor brick apartment building.

The antenna does not require much fussing or moving around. I get the best results on VHF when the rabbit ears are fully extended and close to horizontal, and UHF results are also good. I usually keep the amplifier set for maximum gain, but some stations do come in well with the amp off or on lower settings.

My only complaint is that the bottom of the rabbit ear rods, where they pivot, look like they should have been of a sturdier construction. It looks like it might not be very hard for them to be broken, so I will handle them gently.

The antenna has a maximum gain of about 22db, according to my manual, and is sufficient for my purposes, but I have seen other antennas like this for a similar price with 40 db of gain or more. But gain claims can sometimes be misleading.

You can never be sure how such an antenna will work at a given location until you try it, so make sure you have a good return or refund policy when you purchase one.

Several reviewers in situations almost identical to mine have reported terrible results with this product, and I have also seen several people similar to me who gave it good reviews.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I concur with the many others who give this antenna a bad review...though I'll backup my opinion with some quantitative numbers. I tested this antenna two ways.

First I compared it with and w/o amplification. I've found that the amplifier doesn't work right. Even though it has a knob to tune the gain, this switch is effectively useless. There's basically only ONE narrow setting (turn the knob about 90 degrees after you turn it on) that works. Anymore or less than that, you get VERY poor reception (when the amp is on)! In fact, if I turn the gain all the way up, I receive zero channels! Without any amplification, I can receive only about half of all available channels in the area...and about half of those channels have a reception strength of less than 50%; only about a quarter of those are really watchable (w/o pauses and such). With amplification (at the right spot), I can watch about 3/4 of those stations that I do receive. As the amplification only works in that one position (that I've found), I don't see why they even bother including an adjustable knob...it should just be an on/off button for the amplification. With the amplification, I can usually get about 10~15% better reception strength compared to the unamplified signal.

In my second test, I compared it to my several year old RCA ANT-200 amplified antenna. I placed both antennas in the same position and oriented the antennas and loop the same way. For every channel that this antenna received, the signal strength on the RCA is always 15~25% better (both in amplified mode; RCA gain set to max, while the RS antenna set to that one position that works). For example, Channel 2 might have a signal strength floating around 50% on the RS antenna, but the RCA antenna will be floating around 75~80%!

As most of you who have DTV know, usually a signal strength below 35% or so is not a watchable channel; while just about all channels above 40% are okay. Even in the optimal position, this RS antenna just doesn't compare to the several-year-old RCA antenna. On the RCA antenna, I can just about watch every channel in the area, with only one channel down at 40%, while the RS antenna has that same channel at only 12% (effectively no signal).

This product does work, but it just doesn't work quite right...and not up to par, considering that it's about the same cost of the RCA ANT-200 antenna... If this was a $15 or cheaper antenna, I would consider keeping it, but as it's twice that cost, I'm returning mine to the store...

It is unfortunate to see the emotional responses to a product that is expected to be perfect in every application. I purchased this antenna to receive digital broadcast, not analog. This antenna is not perfect, but then no indoor antenna is. Almost every aspect of reception depends on location location location. I was able to receive very reasonable signals while on 3rd floor of a condo and my line of sight to the Shoreview broadcast towers is behind three large steel chimney flues. So, I recommend trying the product and if it does not work for you, take it back and try another. I was able to receive all local digital channels except channel 17. Did not try 41 in St Cloud. None of the channels are perfectly stable and signal strength varies (not the fault of the antenna).

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

People need to understand ....this antenna, like any other on the market ...regardless of cost, is NOT going to work in ALL situations or locations! If you want an antenna to work WELL for YOU in YOUR location you have to select the RIGHT antenna design for your location. "IF" you are within 10 miles of the TV Station's transmitter and do NOT have a mountain or any other MAJOR obstructions between YOU and the TRANSMITTER, this antenna is a GOOD low-cost solution. I bought this antenna to solve a temporary need, until I could spend the time and expense to put up the "right antenna" for MY location in relation to my area's television transmission towers. For the short term, for me this antenna has worked adequately. I purchased this antenna in January 2006 so I could get the Super Bowl broadcast in High Def ...it worked GREAT!

I plan on installing a more substantial and higher gain rooftop antenna that is suitable for my location this spring. This little Radio Shack antenna worked fairly well for me. If you live out in TIM-BUK-TOO ...and the closest TV transmission tower is 50 miles away or you have a major obstruction between this little antenna and the tower ...guess what, this antenna is NOT going to work for you ...but that doesn't mean this antenna is a pile of junk!

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I have a 20-year old analog TV set which nonetheless still works well. However, the UHF reception at my new house in Columbia, MD was very poor with standard rabbit ears. I took a chance on this indoor antenna from Radio Shack. It gives me very definite improvement on the UHF channels, though VHF performance is about the same. I had realistic expectations ( I'm NOT one of those who must have the latest & greatest in tech). For me the improvement is sufficient to keep the product. If you're in a similar situation, have realistic expectations, and like myself hate the idea of paying high cable bills, this antenna could be a great choice. Of course, performance will vary greatly depending on your location. Usually the only way to know is to try it.

Im definitely not a gearhead and prefer not to waste hours and hours of my life watching TV each day, but this thing, for the price, couldnt even bring in the basic channels. I was constantly adjusting. Im gonna get the cheaper ones this time. Methinks $$ was the main reason he suggested this model to me.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

The folks who are unhappy with this antenna must have analog TVs. It does not work well with those channels (4, 5, etc). But go to the digital ones (4.1, 4.2, 5.1, 5.2, etc) and the picture is fantastic. The few shows in Hi Def are too good...ya really see the freckles!
The instructions say to extend or collapse the antennae depending on channel range you want to watch. That would be a big nuisance but I found it works fine for all channels with the antennae extended for only two segments.
I was disappointed to find the coax connection is the slip-on kind versus threaded/screw-on. I've heard screw-on makes a better connection but I'm pleased enough as is. So far, no accidental slip-offs.
What I do not like is sometimes the picture's digital packets are not received, making a skippy or frozen picture. I do not know if this is the fault of the antenna not receiving the data or other interference not the fault of the antenna. The gain control is on full blast. I'd rather have a constant old analog picture than this dropped digital data but ... our government regulators says we gotta go digital.

Live in remote area with nearest station 25 miles and most 50 miles. By correctly positioning the rabbit ears and the gain it drags the fringe station to my [*] with booming stereo. I use in kitchen where there is a lot of wiring, lighting, ect. and it works great. It takes up a little counter top room when extended but tht is a small price to pay.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

I recently got an HD DVR for DirecTV, but to my disappointment I found that our 6 local channels did not come in in HD. The only option was to plug in an over-the-air antenna to the receiver or the TV.

For the price, I could hardly ask for more. Setup was easy, and it took more time for the DirecTV tuner to identify all the available channels than anything else. About 5 minutes of fiddling with the positioning, and I'm now enjoying great reception on all the local HD channels (including "extra" ones that the main channels provide). The circular antenna for HD can be positioned anywhere from the horizontal to vertical, and rotates on its base, too. (Fortunately, all our local channels have their antennas in the same place, so I won't have to move it at all.)

My only complaints, and they're rather trivial, are that I would like a longer coax cable (it's only 6 feet) and it would be nice if the rabbit ears, which I don't have any use for, folded down more neatly or were removable.

One hint: Don't even turn on the gain knob unless you have need to. I turned it on right away thinking it would help, but I what I discovered was that the reception was actually far superior without it. So try it both ways and play with the antenna location and positioning. It's well worth the effort, especially for this price.

I decided to not get cable when I moved into my new place to save money and decided to buy an ok atenna. I replaced this with my $8 rabbit ears which I only get 2 channels that you can actually watch, and the same 2 channels seem to come in a little clearer with this model so I did not return it. Maybe it all depends where you live to see what will come in good or not- if I can just get FOX I'd be happy. I think I'm going to upgrade to $50- $65 dollar model and move this to the bedroom. If it sucks then I will take it back. But I guess this is okay but not much better then the $8 Rabbit ears.

I live in the DFW Metroplex and got every digital channel except FOX and ABC. 27 was weak, as well. I decided it was worth it to spend the money on this nice, amplified antenna as an upgrade from my bare-bones dipoles. Boy, was I wrong. I lost many digital channels and the amplification seemed to do nothing. I may try to find a new antenna, but for now, I will return this and use my ol' rabbit ears.

I purchased this hoping the kids could get better reception in their play room. Unfortunately, it was no better than the standard, non-amplified antenna we already had hooked up. I tried several different positions, and played with the gain button, to no avail. It might have a 1 or 2% improvement over the old antenna, but honestly, I can't notice anything. Unfortunatly for me, I bought this while on vacation in the U.S., but am back home in Canada [...]

First of all, I got this because I have an older version (discontinued) that's amplafied and I liked it. The old one had 15db gain and this has 22db so I thought it would be as good or better...I was wrong.

This thing is absolutely worthless...when I turned the adjustment knob from off to low I lost allmost all the channels and when I got to med/high I couldn't pick up anything.

Save your money. Get anything else.

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Despite playing aroung with the amplification knob on the front (as a previous reviewer suggested was likely the main problem for other people) we still only received 2 channels. Those two channels were slightly more clear than they had been with our previous antenna, but that's not enough to warrant keeping this product considering we live in the middle of Denver.

I am not sure why other people have so many complaints about this antenna. I have been using it for about a week now and it works very well. Although its not perfect (and I don't expect the reception to be perfect), I get most of the local channels very clearly. Some channels are a little problematic, but by positioning the antenna I can get watchable reception.

It works for me and I would recommend this antenna.

I've had other radio shack antennas before, but I've never had one that got reception this bad! It literally took 5 min to find a channel in the middle of the city - something that my old Radio Shack antenna did effortlessly. I strongly recommend looking at another antenna.

Mine works great for me... I think the reason why people don't have very good luck with them is because they don't use the 'gain' nob on the front. As you turn up the gain nob you increase the amplification the ant puts out. All these bad reviews seem to be just because people refuse to skim the manual...

By Joyce P from Fremont, CA on 5/5/2007

Comments about RadioShack Amplified VHF/UHF/FM Indoor Antenna:

Snap to use, great reception. I don't know why it works so well for me in contrast to most of the other reviews, but I'm very happy with this antenna. It not only brings in more stations than my previous (now deceased) antenna (was not a Radio Shack product) but they also come in much clearer. A good buy. One thing I'm not crazy about is the physical size, a bit big. My previous antenna was smaller, sleeker and ranked a little higher on the "cool" meter, but then again I would never trade good looks over functionality (in antenna's anyway :)
