this helicopter is great i love it.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Main rotors lean causing unstable flight.
When I tried it even at full thrust it only rose 7-13 feet.(fully charged)
Good for indoor uses.
A cheap present.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Use this helo indoors, adjust trim with middle dial and practice. The more you fly the funner it gets.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
spinning like crazy, break easy and won't move forward.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I used it 4 times before it broke. The throttle stuck wide open on landing a couple times. The blades hit something and chipped pieces out so now it won't work. This was used by me - 46 year old adult not children in a large room and it didn't make last for 2 hrs.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
This helicopter was difficult to control and crashed into everything. It cant be used outdoors because of the sunlight interfering with the signal and the rotors wore away quickly. It lasted about a week.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
As you can see from the photo, it has two main rotors, and they rotate in opposite directions. That means the reaction (driving) torques cancel, making some things simpler. Full-scale helos are also made that way, but perhaps only by the Russians (Kamov, iirc). Very likely, the full-scale "real" helo that this models has only one main rotor. It has two channels: [1] main rotor speed, and [2] tail rotor speed and direction (it does reverse). Control response seems very quick.Right up front in the nose is a quite-bright green LED. Fun, and also blinks when the battery is low.Considering that it has to carry its own battery and run long enough to be interesting, it's a nice piece of work. This would not have been possible some years ago; it's modern technology, and being affordable is even better. The tail rotor motor is quite tiny! The propeller, itself, has an unusual shape that reminds me of HPV props. There must be one main drive motor. Rough estimate of main rotor speed is 1,000 rpm at steady altitude. Both are 6 inches in diameter.[...]Mine has had all sorts of crashes and falls, and it's still in fine shape. It's actually rugged, if you have any common sense. It has to be extremely light, or else it couldn't fly. Many times, I thought it had been destroyed or damaged severely, and it was OK. If it simply falls or bumps against something, it's durable (and light) enough to survive quite nicely. If you step on it, of course, it can't take that.Your dog will total it, I'll wager.Good advice, to give it lots of "throttle", so it takes off rather quickly. Once airborne, things get tricky. Altitude control takes practice. Backing off the "throttle" (main rotor speed) even a small amount means quick loss of altitude, but, you can learn. If you have low ceilings (I'm 6 ft., and can touch mine), try not to let it get too close; if it does, it gets stuck up there! Try to take hold of it and let the "throttle" go. However, if it falls, it will very likely survive. With practice, you might be able to back off, to unstick it, and maybe regain enough thrust to keep it from hitting the floor.Main rotor is very light, yet quite tough. Ring around the blades seems to be spring steel; also adds inertia, as well as protecting the blades from hitting anything/everything. It also serves as a frame for the gyro action described later. As shipped, it hovers; its C.G. is right in the middle. Adding weight to the nose makes it fly forward.I haven't yet added much weight, and controlling yaw is quite hard; I understand better why some serious outdoor radio-controlled helos have yaw-stabilizer gyros! With only slight forward ballast, its fuselage direction is a delicate balance between tail rotor thrust, and the [difference between] main rotor reaction (drive) torques. The ballast weights they give you apparently fit into the sides of the forward "foot" on the fuselage, I think. I stuck just one onto the bottom label, slightly forward. Weights are little die-cut circles in thick flexible plastic stock, sticky-backed.I did try to form (bend) the main rotor blades to change their pitch some, to balance yaw torque (without upsetting lift thrust asd motor load too much!). Yaw trim was hard over, otherwise. The transmitter has two single-axis controls; the other axis on each is fake, as are the trim sliders. "Throttle" (main rotor speed) has a spring return, a very good idea. Before it crashes, simply let go!The three LEDs on the front of the transmitter must be infrared. Hard to figure out, but the little fin-like affair on top seems to be the photosensor for the receiver. When the red transmitter power pilot LED blinks, that apparently means it's in standby; iirc, if neglected, it will blink. To make it transmit, you move the "throttle" all the way once; that doesn't make the helo's motors start.Considering what it's like to learn to fly a serious outdoor RC helo, this one surely seems a lot simpler! It's meant to rise, fly forward, and change altitude. It's not meant to have the total maneuverability of a serious helo. (It goes sidewise only when on the floor and tipped over! It will not right itself.)After a few charge cycles, I found that the charge LED flashed for quite a while; if that happens, be patient. (Flashing means "almost charged", they say.)Charging take a good while, quite likely so the cell inside the helo doesn't get hot. (The fuselage is a very good insulator! Maybe the hole in the bottom, bottom end of the main rotor shaft, is a cooling air inlet?)"Li Po" is not lithium polonide, nor the name of a Chinese emperor. (^_^) (It's lithium-polymer, the technology used for the on-board rechargeable battery.)Instructions didn't say anything about the tiny charge connector; of course, it mates only one way; don't get it backwards and force it!It seems totally OK to pick it up by the little plastic tube on top of the main rotor shaft, even when spinning. Shaft seems to be made of spring steel (music wire?), likewise the rotor rings. For technical people, the main rotor is interesting; four blades, and opposite pairs rock together, see-saw fashion. As they rock, they warp the tips of the other pair of blades by tilting the ring. Likely that the differential pitch change makes the rotor precess according to gyro physics. Result is that the ring around the rotor runs quite true.Clever.Differences in pitch among individual blades don't seem to be a problem; I didn't try too hard to make them match. The main rotors are pretty thoroughly engineered, and assembly doesn't look exactly trivial.I bought the spare-parts kit, but haven't needed it, yet; was pleasantly surprised at the helo's durability.Because the control is only motor speeds, there's no need for tiny servos, and that saves a good bit of weight. If you hold it with the bottom toward your face and run it up to speed, the breeze is pretty impressive. Not quarter bad for a tiny motor and tiny cell.Holding it at speed at eye level, and gently tilting the fuselage, you'll see strong gyro action in the rotors, which must keep it very stable in roll and pitch. The fuselage is expanded-bead PS foam, dyed black. No, you can't open it up, afaik, without cutting. Risk of cutting into the Li Po cell is not trivial; don't try! It might catch fire -- seriously! The prototype (full-size, "real") is a Sikorsky, and they licensed the appearance. All things considered, [$] is a very decent price.

X-Mas gift for five year old. Lasted four days of use, with parental supervision. I have given up trying to tape the rotors back together. If you get this as a gift, re-gift it.

Like I said, lets be real. This is a TOY !!. If you want more control, you need to buy a real rc copter...but for the[$] I paid for this, it is COOL !!. I fly it around my house, mess with my cats and wife, and never get bored. Like I said, It is only for FUN !! Enjoy !PS: you can buy a blade parts kit...Cheap !!
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
It takes a bit of patience to get use to manuvering the throttle and once you have, it is rather fun. It was purchased for our 7 year old but I have enjoyed flying it much more. It is a light weight material that can be damaged easily if it is hit just right. I have knocked it around the house several times and the blades have chipped a bit and there is a small crack in the tail. However, it still holds a good charge and flies. In time I know the blades or tail will break and then it will be trash. Is it worth the [$]? ....not really...because of the potential for quick ruin to me it should be priced much lower.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
As a product of the Nintendo generation, I (27) found this helicopter easy to fly and worth the money. I purchased a similar, albeit cheaper, RC Heli for my brother (30) on Christmas. I wanted to see if flying a mini-heli would be fun to pick up as a hobby, so I started animal testing. It lasted two days (4-5 chargings), hit a shelf, and died. I got a total of 2 minutes flying time as that was all the time I could pry it away from my brother. It was out of control, but funner than expected. I bought him another cheap-o and this one for myself. I was flying circles around him within the hour, not to mention how much cooler the green light and black-on-black fuselage looked compared to his flying clown copter. Twice the price, but who can put a price tag on a victory in sibling rivalry. The heli itself is extremely stable, comparitively. Once you figure out how to hover and adjust the trim, then you can add rubber pads to the front to give it a slight (and I mean slight) forward motion. I was a little disappointed that you only control up, down, and rotate; but in a 15' by 15' by 12' room, that's all one really needs. I will be trying out an upgrade, maybe the mosquito, next year.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
one word describes this heli. JUNK. all it causes is head aches. spend the extra 5 bucks and get a dif. heli.the ir sucks on it. its like the old tvs that you have to point the remote at the sensor or it wont work.they should have put the sensor on bottom of it instead of the top. the rotors are constantly getting tangled in each other.umm good paper weight!! thats about it.

Ran 3 minutes on full charge the first time, less the second. Third time could not even take off.
Would not recommend this to anyone. Very disappointing
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I charged mine the thirty minuets and the helicopter rose to the celing and when I let off the throtle it kept rising and hit the celing. then it droped to the floor telling me to recharge. I charged it again the same thing happened. I returned it to radio shack where the nice fella told me to charge it over night now it will hover about an inch over the ground untill my dog attacks.

This toy is good, my son learned to fly it and can hover, land and go foward.
It is starfoam but it take a beatting and keep running.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
very flimsy. Wings broke on the first flight. No replacement wings provided.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
The kids lost interest quickly because it spends more time downed than flying. The battery would only last about 10 minutes before you have to stop playing and recharge it. It only hoverd despite all the recommended adjustments. Not much fun.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Very short flight time for a 30 minute charge. Flights are fairly limited to up/down with very little forward motion. Left/Right only rotates left/right. With no forward motion, controlling the tail rotor does nothing. (Did you guys even research the flight priciples behind slingwings?)The helicopter will throttle up/down by itself. If you get in a pinch and release the throttle, the thing will keep throttling up and go out of control ... especially bad when on the ground .. causes it to fly into things. When not even touching throttle control, it will throttle up by itself.Seems to have on-board chip that restricts you keeping the throttle open as it will throttle down and allow the helicopter to land, then take off again, even though you never moved the throttle controller. The counter-rotating blade makes for a very stable flight, but you really can't control it other than up/down and spinning. You can't fly it around the room. Want to land somewhere specific? Forget it.This one is going back to Radio Shack. [...].
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I have only had the ability to fly mine indoors, but I would agree that it would be best for outdoor use. And for the money, how could you go wrong? I'm suprised to see so many negative comments, I think maybe this "toy" is being taken way too seriously. Maybe for those of you who are more serious about your toys, you might consider going to a higher quality and more expensive RC because after all, it's all about having fun. Just a thought!
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
This is a toy that's probably best for older kids or the young at heart. Mine's crashed multiple times but is still flying just fine. Takes some practice to get the hang of it. Good for terrorizing the dog.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Its very well built, and pretty light. I crashed mine countless times and its still as good as new. The blades are protected by the thin ring around them. Its easy to control as long as you adjust the tail rotor trim during the flight, and use small movements. But the only problem is even after a full charge, it'll only climb to the top of the cieling for the first few minutes, then it wont get any higher than half a foot off the ground, Im not sure if mine's just a dud though, anyone else have this problem?
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
This is a very useless toy. I do not recommend it to anyone of any age. Wings are like paper as it shreds itself to pieces. Only flies up and down.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Flown carefully by an adult and rotor broke after only a few flights. Rotors entangle when you back off on the throttle to prevent hitting ceiling. Also, controls are very flakey and helicopter sometimes starts running all by itself, further complicating crashes when you have to chase it under the furniture and the rotor blades wrap up. Very flimsey construction and certainly not worth [$]for the 1/2 hour it lasted.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I charged it the first time. The second time I attempted to charge the chopper, the plug inside the helicopter crumbled. It was totally useless.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
My experience was the same as many others have said - the helicopter I got would ONLY hover. We added more weight to the front but it would still only hover and wouldn't fly as high because it was heavier. Since others have gotten it to fly forward I'm guessing that it's the luck of the draw if yours will fly forward or just hover. I'm going to try someone's suggestion to place the rubber weights on the end of a straightened paperclip stuck in the nose. All-in-all however, even though it only hovers, it is very cool for the money.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
We had great fun christmass morning then the rotors broke little by little untill it would not fly any more.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
this item is not worth [$]
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I got mine and the first day tried it out a little. I crashed it about 8 or 9 times then put it up. The next day I got it out and played with it, I tried the trim when it was just about a foot off the ground and it smoothed out. I could make it hover all most in one spot! Needless to say IV never flew a plan or helicopter before in my life and this got me hooked. Iv been flying mine for a week now and never had a problem from it. Crash after crash I look at it and its always fine! I got replacement parts for it when I got it just in case. Never had to use them yet! For only [$]this is one good gift for people who like a little challenge.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
My 6 year old son got this for Christmas and loved it, until it broke a hour later. The blades are really weak and broke within the first hour of play. You have to be very careful with this toy.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
For [$] it doesn't get much better than this. I've had mine for 3 days now and flown it a lot. You don't have great control but it's still a blast. It's a tough little guy too...I've crashed it at least a hundred times and it keeps on flying.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
T/R motor broken. Blades broken. fun but broke easy.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
You just gotta wonder how can they fit, rechargable battery, motor, RC reciever, control board, wires, etc all in less than a square inch box. It is so much fun, I bought one for myself to play with. Sure if you bang it it will break the blade since they are very thin (we are not flying a boeing here), but nothing a tape can't fix. Make sure you angle the blade so it creates a air lift.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
This has no range and the first minute of the "flight" is the best. After that it will get a few feet off the ground, go beyond the 5 foot range and crash. Very disappointing! It looks good and has not self destructed yet, the only things it has going for it. Get the Micro mosquito 2 if you want one, you may as well get something that actually works.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
The manufacturer should be more honest when they say the helicopter can be controlled forwards and backwards. You can steer it up and down and turn left and right. I added some weight to the nose to try to get it to move forward on it's own, there is no way for it to fly backwards. If you want to reverse direction, you have to spin it around and fly forwards.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
This is a good little toy. Since it is lightweight, it will not easily damage items in the house. If the rear rotor seems to not function well anymore, check it for hair wrapped around the shaft. Same for the main rotor. Yes, replacement blade kits are available in store for about six dollars and fifty cents. You get the two main blades, two spacers, two silicone stoppers, and a rear propeller. I replaced the main blades in about two minutes. That being said, make sure to go ahead an buy the blade kit along with the toy, you WILL be needing it. If an adult or older teen uses it, they will last longer than ours did. Also, discourage smaller children from retreiving the toy as it is fairly delicate. Always grasp the toy by the bulk of the body, not the tail section. The toy does not fly forward or backward by use of the remote, only by weight distribution. Add weight to the front and it moves forward. More weight equals faster travel. The same goes for reverse. Make sure to use the rotor control knob to fine tune the left/right function. This must be done each time as well as during flight as the battery decreases energy. All in all, a fun little toy.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Cannot get it to stop spinning when in the air. The instruction say adjust the top or bottom blade depending on which direction it is spinning. It does not say how to adjust the blades. The trim control does not have enough trim in it to control the spin. Could be fun if it would stop spinning. It will go to the to of my ceiling whicj=h is 22' tall.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I bought this as a Christmas gift for my father and we managed to get the helicopter to hover fairly easily; however, it wouldn't really go forward no matter what we did. We followed the instructions - adding weight to the nose to try to make it more inclined to move in a forward direction but even after using all 4 "weights" it still just hovers in the air.
The directions indicate that the helicopter isn't intended to hover but for some reason that was all we could get this one to do. The directions also indicate that if you're having control issues that you might need to adjust the top rotor but they don't provide you any information on HOW to adjust the rotor. It seems like it could be a decent product if they just put a little more focus on quality control and making sure the directions include more details on adjustments.
I was disappointed in the product considering what I spent on it and I could tell my father was a bit disappointed too. He was looking forward to flying the copter but quickly became frustrated by the fact that it wouldn't go forward like it was supposed to.
Also, if you let off the throttle too much and the helicopter begins to drop, it's difficult to recover because the air pressure tends to deflect the blades and make them hit eachother. I'd recommend that you try to be there to catch the helicopter if necessary to avoid it hitting the floor hard.
Based on the reviews of the higher priced micro mosquito, I think I'd go that route if I had it to do over again.

Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
I bought it on sale and wasn't sure what to expect. After I brought it home I started charging the battery and started reading the reviews that are on this page. This is what I found out to be correct and incorrect. I used trial and error, not someone's opinion.
Everyone kept saying that it isn't a 7 function helicopter, it IS. The 6th and 7th function is the trim dial though, not forward and backward.
Some people were saying the blades are weak and can't get new ones. I've crashed mine over 40 times and the blades are still going strong. And they do have replacements, maybe they just didn't have them in stock at the time when the Helicopter was bought.
Its recommended for 10+ years of age. Someone on here said there 7 year old couldn't fly it. Well, if you don't follow the guidance given you'll have a different experience now won't you? Stay above the recommended age.
It does have a toilet bowl effect out of the box but that can be fixed. Take a paper clip and straighten it out. Add three of the weights given to one end and stick the other end into the front nose. This will stabilize the hover and also make it fly forward at a slow pace.
Some were saying the body is flimsy because its made from foam. My car has foam in the bumpers to help on crashes. I think a helicopter that weighs a couple of ounces can handle a crash or two. Bottom line, the body is tough and won't break unless you crush it with your foot.
I can fly around 13-15 minutes on one charge and a charge takes about 25 minutes. Once its charged the charging turns itself off so you can't over charge. So far I've charged it over 15 times and the batteries in the remote are still going strong.
One bad thing is that my wireless internet interrupts the remote signal. But if I keep it about 10 feet away I don't have the problem.
All in all its a very fun toy. And for the $$ you can't beat it. I'm buying another one today so my friends and I can "Battle" them.
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Very good first-timer's R/C helicopter. It flies very stable and still. Strong and sturdy styrofoam body is ideal for absorbing impacts. Rotors are very thin plastic and can break easily (they knew it so they supply a replacement kit). Only cons are the weak blades and the fact that it keeps going when flown to battery limit (reason rotors broke because it kept spinning them while on the ground), so don't fly it all the way to battery life (lesson learned =P). Overall, a very nice and equipped R/C chopper, good fun.

It can only go up and down and spin left and right and stop.,Thats 5 functions i believe, cannot go forwards and backwards. It is easy to control and hovers and glides nicely
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
It is a very good toy and you do have to remember that it is not PRO R/C grade but it dosent cost [$] either. a very good learning tool for my 9 year old. We have made at least 100 flights with it so far and alot of bad landings has held up very well. steering is a little slack but the rotor control knob is the key. Just have patience and you will be a pro.

We all have a blast with this product. It would be nice if it stayed charged a little longer and it is a little hard to steer. It steers sharp. Over all though it is fun. Even our family dog loves when we play with this toy. There ARE replacement blades available so when they break, which they will. You can't crash a toy and not expect it to break eventually. If you want precision and fine craftsmanship buy a replica not this toy. If you want a fun time for everyone at a fraction of the cost pick this toy!
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
Yes there are replacement blades available now. Stop by your local Radioshack. It breaks because some of you are not careful with it. Not for outdoor use whoever was saying a breeze made it lose control. Box even says for use in your home.

Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
First helicopter and have not been able to put it down. Operates on a charge longer than I thought it would (seems longer than 5 minutes) and recharges quickly (20 or so minutes). Takes a few launches to learn how to control but fantastic experience of just goofing around. BTW, fun to watch our dog jump for it.....
Comments about RadioShack 2-Channel Transformers Blackout RC Helicopter:
It takes just a little getting used to to master the controls, but once you have it down, this toy does, indeed, possess all 7 functions previous reviewers have complained about not being present. Following the simple directions included allows one to get the most out of this toy, although care should be exercised to ensure that you don't smash the blades while you're still getting the hang of the controls. Contrary to previous reviewers, there *are* replacement blade kits available - simply ask at your local radio shack, as the listing for them on the web site is no longer up. I've managed to bash mine, crash mine, drop it, and abuse it in the course of figuring out the finesse of the controls, and mine is still in great shape. Using the trim knob is an absolute MUST to get the most out of this toy, and it's NOT for young children, unless you really want to spend your time fishing it out of odd places and risk snapping the rotors right off the bat. One one gets the feel for the controls, I would definitely rate this a "Beginner" toy, however I would not recommend it for anyone under 10, really. It's more a toy for an older collector or young adult to enjoy. Charge time is average - nothing near as quick as a Zip Zap - and flight time is a little disappointingly short for the charge time, but you still get a decent amount of play time between charges to make this toy fun and enjoyable to play with. All in all, I'm very glad I got it and am still having a blast with it.

Flew for quite a while before becoming unstable and crashing. But would recover quickly to fly again. Even after numerous crashes needed no repair even though I bought spare rotors I haven't needed them yet.

I wish I read the reviews before making this purhase, it only hovers and spins, does not have control for forward or reverse. After only 5 flights, the rotors cracked on landing and they cannot be replaced. It looks good but now our 7 year old is in tears because his birthday gift is useless! DO NOT BUY!
