Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
very cumbersome to program but once programmed it works great.. This is the first radio like this I have purchased ever and I would highly advise people that are outside alot especialy during severe weather to purchase this radio.. In my area the weather sometimes plays tricks but not to many tornados but sometimes alot of severe thunderstorms.. I am a fire fighter and this plays an important role in our efforts in our response to incidents and how we handle them..
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I use it at home during severe weather and/or hurricane season. It was a bit cumbersome to program, ( I didn't have a guide,)but got the hang of it. Convenient to have pdf manuals @ Radioshack.com. It is home on my counter with AC adapter, or with me on battery power when not. I must add that battery life is short; just over 2 days of continuous use max. AC adapter is a good investment. I have had other weather radio's and this is my fav. Pro's: Small and portable. Pro's certainly outweigh the cons!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Very disappointed. Though it picks up stations well, Volume 1 (the lowest) just about blasts you. And the beep of everytime you tried to program something drove me and my dog nuts. I read the instructions, and this is just too hard to program for me to keep it. Taking it back because it just is not user friendly.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
After doing a *lot* of research, I decided to give this model a try, despite conflicting reviews. Several indicated that this unit cannot be set to get either local alerts or to turn off certain alerts--mine sure can. Others indicated there was no way to turn it off--I've got an on/off button on the top of the unit and it works just fine. Not sure if those reviews were for a previous model or if users didn't explore the options. Yes, this unit does receive tornado warnings--the reason it is not listed among the various alerts you can turn off is that they don't allow you to turn that one off. Mine works very well at filtering out alerts I don't need and alerts for areas that are far away. With a home adapter and a car adapter, I use this unit to move from home to on the road to work (I commute an hour each way). I also have an Oregon Scientific unit, and the Radio Shack one seems to pick up the warnings more consistently. Comparing the set up between the two, the Radio Shack model is much easier. Radio Shack also has a "travel" mode, where you will get a more wide area alert but the channels are selected automatically as you move. Great for me as I travel through several states on a routine basis.
Cons: as previously mentioned, operating this on batteries is rather laughable, belying it's "portability"--you really need to be able to plug this in. Also, my particular unit can't keep time consistently, so I need to reset the clock daily. And, if the unit does not receive the weekly test signals, it will begin to display an error message, "check operation". Although the Oregon Scientific consistently gets the test signals, the Radio Shack, for some reason, does not (I checked the settings, and have turned on all the test modes). All in all, I'd rather get the real thing, which the Oregon Scientific one sometimes misses, than the test ones, and I deal with the error messages. A picky concern is that Radio Shack really should package this with the plug in adapter as it really is a required item.
I still think this is the best unit I have used.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I agree with everyone on the battery life comments. We take it camping with us where this is an issue. The solution was that we only turn it on at night. This was one of the few radios I found that could be clipped on a belt and carried around, which was a big selling point in camp. The other good thing is the temperature reading, which is nice. Admittedly the setup is a bit tedious but once you get it done it is fine. I love the SAME technology. Unfortunately television here sets off alerts for a huge area so I appreciate knowing when I am really going to be effective. I would also agree that a slightly lower volume would be nice, however if you are a heavy sleeper this is the one for you.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Well built unit but it's terrible on batteries and goes through 3 AA alkalines in about a week. The 120v power cord is a must for this unit. The volume, even on the lowest level is really loud. There is no on/off button so it's always on and the alerts can't be turned off either. The only way to turn this thing off is to remove the batteries and then you have reset the clock when you replace them. If there is a severe weather alert issued, even it's 50 miles away, this things goes off like an electonic gong machine at any hour of the day. If you live in tornado alley where you need a 24 hour a day life saver and have a relative who works for Eveready, this unit is for you. If you want a weather radio that you can have some control over, keep looking. In summary, with the technology available today, this unit is a big disappointment.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This thing will deplete a new set of batteries over the course of a weekend just in alert mode, let alone if you actually turn on the broadcast. The worst device I have ever owned when it comes to this. Don't be lured by the funky style and get something else, something that will actually work when you need it to.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Overall very good Tornado warnings and some others are always active according to the manual. Works fine in NYC are with all the severe T-storms around here these days. Have an AC adapter to use at home 24/7, otherwise will run down batteries very fast.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I've bought 2 other wx radio's in the past 10 years, and only the radio shack brands are still working. This one was the easiest to program once you get the hang of it. The reception is outstanding, much better than the table models. I do suggest you buy the AC adapter as the batteries don't last long, I use it as a home reciever
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Battery life SUCKS! I would recomend it to a freind...who can afford to buy batteries every day.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Receiver seems more sensitive, it pulls in signals other units wont. Excellant buy for the price.

Ice berg warning? Check. Dust Storm warning? Check. "Boil Water" warning? Check. Tornado warning? _NONE_! What were they thinking?
We bought this thing, _especially_ for a _TORNADO_ warning, and it looks like that's the _ONLY_ one they omitted!
Oh, sure, you can get a tornado _watch_ alert (but who needs that going off in the middle of the night if there isn't a tornado?), or a _missed_ alert for tornado warnings, but to make that work, you have to lump it in with every other warning the thing offers. Thus, as far as I have been able to detect, you cannot program this thing to go off just for a tornado warning! What were they thinking??!!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Able to wake me up, even as a heavy sleeper. I feel much safer having this around, especially with the wild and wacky weather we've had in Iowa lately. Only thing--get the AC adapter as well. I'm ordering it now!

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Last year we configured this radio which took some effort. It woke us with an alarm in the middle of the night when a freak storm rolled in at night. That was reassuring. Last week it may have saved our bacon though. It went off minutes before we heard the tornado warning on TV, and before the tornado warning sirens sounded outside. It gave us plenty of time to get to shelter, and kept us updated while we were there. Here in Iowa, we had some terrible tornados last week. This radio or others like it with SAME technology are worth their weight in gold when it counts. Make sure you buy the AC adapter though....batteries drain within a few days.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I bought this radio because of a bad storm that was forecast for my area, the thing worked like a charm. The second the tone went off on the radio the T.V. had the same warning pop up. I know when I sleep at night the radio will go off, and wake me and my family if a storm comes up so we can get to safety.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Even with fresh alkaline batteries they don't last. Volume is too loud even at lowest settings. Sold mine and looking for another with SAME operation.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
There's something wrong with the radio. AC Adapter connector on the radio leaves a white stain like something's leaking. Same goes for the batteries, short life and it leaks.
We had a tornado watch and warning last week and it didn't work. No watch or warning message or sound from radio.

It will eat up 2 set of slow drain batteries in 18 hours. I am talking Lithium Batteries.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This radio is perfect for use around the house or traveling. It took me a while to figure out the display, but once I got the hang of it, I was very pleased. The radio comes with a belt clip, handy to taking with you when walking to the park, etc. I am very pleased with the product!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
We purchased last year, figured it out pretty quickly, and have started using it again this year, no problems. Probably ought to buy the power cord, eats batteries if left on for periods of time.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I purchased this radio for my office and a desk model for our switchboard over a year ago. We are in a far south suburb of Chicago. I need to keep this radio in the window and on an AC adapter, but the alarm does sound during severe weather. In rare cases when we had to take shelter, I unplug the radio and am able to listen anywhere in the plant. Both this radio and the desk model at the switchboard picked up all alerts. My unit is also used during off-shifts by the supervisors. This has worked out well for us.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Screen went blank on second day and changing batteries didn't help. No directions given on dealing with this problem.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Bought this one year ago. Worked great for the first month or so. Somewhat hard to figure out but after I got comfortable with it I used it a bit. Put it in the drawer last fall and pulled it out the other day to use it for our spring storms. It was dead, replaced batteries, etc...still dead.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Great product but I recommend purchasing the AC/DC adapter with the Weather Radio for home use and batteries for electric down time or travel. The Weather Radio is user friendly and offers an alarm, temperature read out, and much more. Good product for the money.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I went through two other name brands of weather radio's before I found this jewel of a weather/alert radio! It's nice size, backlit and large display, water resistant, great antennea and reception make this a great alert system for your home or just camping. I recommend buying the ac adapter vs. just using batteries. The batteries will come handy when the power is off. Enjoy!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This product isn't worth a dime. No matter what batteries you put in it (rechargable or store bought), it always says they aren't charged. This is because it immediately sucks the life out of the batteries for some stupid reason. It just DOES NOT WORK. Don't waste your money! And dont rely on it to save your life.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I bought this radio to alert us to a tornado warning, but i couldn't find the icon. I have to assume it doesn't have one. Pity, because everything else looks good. Why make a weather alert radio without a tornado warning alert? No brains. Going back to the store.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This is a very good portable weather radio, A little aggravating to learn the menu options and you will defiantly want to purchase a DC adapter, It sucks batteries to no end. It was a little aggravating to learn the menu options, But once mastered you can tune it to your area's priorities.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I would recommend this product to anyone, boating, travel,or just a stay at home mom.
do buy the adapter for this though it eats batteries.. over all i'd buy another one!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Purchased this for my MIL for Mother's Day (2007) and last week (Feb.2008) it just died.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
The best feature of this radio is that you don't have to know the FIPS code for your location. They are all programed into the radio. All you need to do is select the state and county you want to monitor. It's too bad that the instructions make NO mention of this. You need to discover this on your own.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This thing EATS BATTERIES! Get an ac adapter if you buy this. I even tried rechargeable batteries, they died too. Works good if in a window. They need to rework this thing.
Also menu is confusing and LOUD!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I use the weather radio in my car and rely on batteries. The batteries burn out dead within 48 hours. Going back to the store.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I purchased this radio yesterday, and I love it. It is very easy to set up after you do a good skim of the intstructions. I have good sound quality evan though I live in the middle of the woods. Overall good radio.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
It does use up batteries, but i am planning on getting the adaptor so I dont have to use them all the time. Occasionally it does not get a signal. But it has worked fine for me, I like to take it with me on bad weather days.

Product went dead after 4 months of setting on night stand. No complaints with product while it worked.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Eats batteries - three alkaline batteries lasts about twenty-four hoursPoor reception - cannot pick up NOAA stations less than sixty miles away unless the weather is clear (kinda defeats the purpose, if you know what I mean)Brutally unfriendly to programFor [$], this thing should have a chargerMy advice is to pass it by

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I bought this Emergency Alert Radio last year before severe weather season started. And this radio is great. I've used it for at home or for travel during the summer. But the worst part was when my brother had a game when their was chance for some storms at the same time. So I got a call about 3-4 innings later and alerted everone and the owners that their was a storm heading for us in 20 min. luckly I alerated everone. If I didn't brought that radio at his game we would of all been in danger. So then the board members liked what I did on that day saving everyone's life. because they didn't have an alert radio. And next year I'm going to bring it again, only on bad days.
So my advice to all Little Leauge owners, buy yourself a desktop Alert NOAA radio/or a handheld radio to keep little ballplayers/family and friends safe.

This radio is well built but is worthless in out lying areas. If you are more than 20 miles from a transmitter, reception is poor.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Great sound and nice "feel" as a solid hand held. Sorely lacking directions without a full-face every button/message legend. A step by step programming sample is not present as you have to guess at the keys (few) in sequence. Once you catch on, piece of cake. I bought, programmed, and made a gift of one. The learning for radio listeners, it may take a bit. Once learned, this battery hungry guy sounds great, travels really well and catches desired alerts. Great product.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Works well, even far from the NOAA stations. Especially considering the short antenna. Every button you press causes a full-volume beep which serves absolutely no purpose, other than to give you a headache. Because of the constant beeps, etting up and learning the radio is difficult to do without throwing it against a wall. Cover the speaker opening with your hand while pressing buttons. Rubber button lettering is impossible to read. Get an adapter to use it at home or in the car. Batteries last four days max.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This is an excellent radio!
It is relyable and I can always count on it to keep me informed.
The reason that it receives alert so quick, is because the broadcasts are directly from The National Weather Service Themselves.
The radio always has the information to me at least five minutes before the TV has anything, or before our local cable relays the EAS alert.
And, not only does it receive weather alerts, it also receives emergency alerts. (i.e terror attack)
And the radios tone-alert is loud enough to wake me up during the night.
I was so pleased by this radio, I brought one for my grandparents and aunt and uncle.
BUY THIS RADIO!
IT COULD SAVE UOUR LIFE!

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This unit DOES have a backlight. The beep for keys is loud and doesn't seem to be adjustable. Takes a few minutes to figure out, but it's fairly straightforeward once it's in use. SAME works wonderfully, reception is great, and it's got a heck of a great volume for the alarm and speaker.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This is a good radio! The only problem is it doesn't publish watches, only warnings.Otherwise the radio is great and announces everything. Get one to save your life!

I had to return- I was willing to overlook the fact that it was not rechargeable until I found it had no backlight for the display. If those two things don't matter to you, you'll love it anyways.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
As everyone else said, keypad beep is annoying, and unit should have come with a plug-in charger. Otherwise it is a great unit. Takes a few minutes to learn to drive it but I travel and the ability to self program SAME codes is a big plus.

Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
The unit seems to be fairly durable and looks like it might be water-resistant. The antenna is stubby plastic, so it won't snap off like the metal antenna used on some radios. The minimum volume control is WAY WAY WAY too loud. I had it set on 1 and even outside in the wind I would have liked to turn it down further. There's no headphone jack, so use it in public at your peril. Even worse is the beep. Every button press elicits a LOUD beep that you cannot turn off. The belt clip is a nice idea, but the radio reception is really lousy if I have it on my belt. However, I live out on a farm, a good 40 or 50 miles away from the nearest stations. It may work adequately on the belt if you are closer to a station. The controls are not very intuitive and take a bit of getting used to, but one you figure them out, setting the unit up is fairly easy. It would have been nice if they'd included a sheet with SAME codes, instead of requiring the user to call an 800 number or look up a web page. Fortunately an employee at the RadioShack I purchased it from was able to look up the codes for me, otherwise I'd have had to wait several days. I live between two NWS radio stations, and reception varies between the two. The auto channel scan always locks onto the first channel, even if it isn't the strongest at the time, and manually changing the channel requires going through a series of menus.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
We just moved to Texas and we've had severe thunderstorms lately. I wanted to know how people here sleep at night with these scary storms and someone told me about weather radios. So I went and bought this radio and was going to take it back because I couldn't find the 'Tornado Warning' preference. I'm guessing it's just automatic because this morning it sounded off and let us know that there was a tornado warning for our county, and even said what towns it was heading for! I will sleep so much better knowing that I can rely on this radio! Everyone in tornado country should have this radio, it could save the life of you and your family! It's worth the money for the peace of mind!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Love this radio. We travel all over the states in an RV. Now I don't have to worry at night, knowing I'll be alerted. Since, we're in different locations all the time, I like how I can remove the batteries for a few seconds, and when re-inserted, I'm tuned to the nearest weather channel for that area. I bought my daughter one and am getting one for my elderly parents. Definitely worth it!!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:

We are not able to set this thing up. Every time we change batteries, we take it back to Radio Shack for them to program. These black pads are horrible. They can't be read.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Must have safety item for every household. Since we have purchased the radio we have been alerted each time there have been severe thunderstorm warnings,and/or tornado warnings issued sometimes before they were talked about on the news. I feel alot more comfortable sleeping at night having this radio in the house. The coverage is excellant even living outside the city limits. Weekly tests are performed to let you know that the radio is still functioning properly. It's well worth the purchase.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Performs as advertised, and does what I want, As a member of SKYWARN I need to have a good alert monitor. So far I like it, the only thing that could be improved (on most every piece of hardware I clip on my belt) is the belt clip (I have 2 very good belt clips, you won't find them in stores)
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I thought this little portable weather radio was so great there is no word for it. It alerted me of a coming twister(f3)Now I wouldnt go enywhere without it!
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
Having this radio should be required for living in tornado country. I carry this radio with me all the time so I can stay on top of storms. One of my favorite things about it is the convinence. I can only listen to my county's warnings, and I don't need to be bothered with other areas. My only problem was the volume control. But aside from that, this radio is an absolute must-have for anybody in tornado country or not.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
This is a great radio. You can program warnings and program the counties you awnt to warning for.It has helped me avoid a tornado while traveling in Florida.Every one should have this.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
If you are like me, and you want to have a radio that recieves SAME weather alerts, this is a radio you may want to check out. It's fairly easy to program. You can also block out alerts that you don't want to hear, like say for example if you lived on a mountain and there was a flash flood, you probably wouldn't want to be bothered by that alert, so you can just block stuff like that out and change it whenever you want, which I do really apperciate. It would be very annoying if you where in public and the thing kept going off for misc warnings you didn't care about, so it's nice to be able to block that out. Now, let me just say that although this is a decent buy, there are some drawbacks. The main thing that I don't like is the digital volume control. When you set it on the lowest setting, it's still a little bit too loud. If I was sitting in an airport, and was curious to check the weather, the truth is, I wouldn't probably want to use this, because it would be loud enough for others to be bothered by it. It doesn't make sense why they would make the volume go lower. Also, anytime you press the buttons, there's this annoying beep that you can't shut off. Now on a better note, it has has a backlight, that goes on whenever you hit a button, and stays on for a few seconds. It also has a clock. Though you can't really fit it in a pants pocket, it does have a belt clip. It looks like it is built tough. You can also program the SAME alerts for multiple locations. As far as the alerts, there was a severe thunderstorm warning, and this thing started going off like crazy, and it was set on the lowest volume, so it can go pretty loud, and that's good for if you're sleeping or something and there's a warning. It should wake you up, espectially on the louder setting! Reception is good, and when you set it on one of the seven NOAA stations, it will be on that setting when you turn it on again. If you want alerts, you may want this. Monitoring weather broadcasts for very long will really wear the batteries down fast because of the volume. If you want to listen for long periods of time, (like when there's severe weather), I'd suggest getting the multiband radio that recieves NOAA weather broadcasts that Radio Shack sells. I bought that and it is a handy little radio. You can check out my review for that radio on this site right now by going to the portable radio menu and scrolling down to portable radios. Then click on multiband. The review should be up with the next few days. As for this radio, it's probably a good buy for the money. But it will eat up the batteries, so there's a little port for an adapter.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I have this radio on 24/7 in my office. It is available to all shift supervisors to stay on top of severe weather. I had to create and post a basic operation instruction, but am generally pleased. We are on a fringe area and in a metal building, so signal loss is a problem when you take it deep inside of the building.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I used this radio for a fishing trip and it worked great. I thought it was pretty easy to use and it scanned the available stations on its own. Setting it features up takes a few minutes, but once you are done it is pretty handy. I liked the clock, alarm clock and thermometer functions, just avoid direct sunlight for an accurate temp. Also, some how I managed to put a thumb print on the screen and it won't come off, so watch the bug spray and sun screen while handling.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
It's an excelent go-anywhere radio. The belt clip attachment really stays put. I like the rugged costruction, its really built to last. Programming is a bit akward but not bad.
Comments about RadioShack 7-Channel Handheld Weatheradio® with SAME Operation:
I've used weather radios since the 70s. This one is good, IF... and it's a big IF, you can program it for your area. It is not easy and it takes a LOT of time/patience to do it. You really have to study the owner's manual to get it right. If you are going to use this one for 24/7 monitoring, you will need the AC adaptor. Batteries last only about a day under continous use. There are only 5 volume levels, and the "lowest" setting is fairly loud. Given that the purpose of the radio is to wake you up, it makes sense. If you want a wx radio with an analog volume control, look for another model.
